Beyond IYV+10 - report on the UNV consultative meeting with NGOs to prepare for Rio+20 and the next decade
United Nations Volunteers (UNV) hosted a three-day meeting in New York on March 19-21, 2012 to consult other stakeholders on follow-up work after the tenth anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers in 2011 (IYV+10), and discuss ways to integrate volunteerism into the upcoming Rio+20 conference on sustainable development.
The meeting was attended by 105 participants from the UN, governments, and a core group of 27 NGOs including IAVE, Caritas, CIVICUS, CEV, the Red Cross, and Partners of the Americas. The gathering strengthened the foundations for further partnerships to achieve common goals in the coming decade.
In the action agenda decided by the delegates, IAVE will provide platforms for the stakeholders to continue to network, build partnerships and move the discussion forward. Upcoming events include the 22nd IAVE World Volunteer Conference in London on December 10-13, 2012; IAVE Regional Volunteer Conferences in 2013 in Latin America (Ecuador), Africa (Rwanda), the Arab States (UAE), and the Asia Pacific (to be decided); another World Volunteer Coneference in 2014; and, looking much further ahead, a 3rd Global Youth Summit in 2021, to mark IYV+20.
