Colombia Country Report from Volunteering Worldwide 2001
"Since the 1960s, voluntary work in Colombia has changed completely. The modern volunteer performs activities, in association with local communities, to improve the
socio-economic and cultural quality of life. The communities themselves state what their problems are. The volunteers assume responsibility for finding solutions together with community members.
Young people, women, and men, the elderly, academics, and students are engaged in this modem form of voluntary work. They are conscious of their responsibility and collaborate in taking up the challenge of performing a social task well. In Colombia the definition of a volunteer is: a person who, exercising his/her right to live in solidarity, freely offers time, abilities, work and money to build the individual and/or collective well-being."
