Strengthening the Organization governance project is now been made possible by assistance of European Union in partnership with Fiji Forum of Non State Actors. Fiji Council of Social Services is indebted to EU for making a difference at provincial, district and community level and in turn towards National Level. Various activities took place since April, 2006 till to date; consequently, this technical report includes September, 2006 to February, 2007.

 

FCOSS has been contracted by the CIVICUS International to do an action-oriented research project to measure the effectiveness of the CSOs in Fiji. There are currently 60 countries implementing this project. FCOSS is the Fiji focal point implementing this and the purpose of the index is to empower and strengthen civil society organizations to fulfill their roles in governance and development. STOGS is a follow up from CIVICUS research [need to empower and strengthen CSO]. In the process of implementing the STOGS programme, FCOSS was promoting & preparing CSO’s in participating in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of education strategies to contribute to National Development Plan with a particular focus on the National Policy Framework for Non Formal and Adult Education.

The aim of this project is to assist with the equal development of a strong and vibrant community welfare sector which conducts 75% of the social services in Fiji; actively contributing to the social, economic and cultural wellbeing of people affected by poverty and inequality and of the nation as a whole.

 

Beneficiaries of this project include various communities in Rakiraki, Tavua, Ba, Lautoka, Nadi, Sigatoka, Navua, Cakaudrove, Bua, Macuata, Lomaiviti & Lau where FCOSS currently has locally-based liaison persons who voluntarily assist FCOSS with successful implementation of it’s programmes at community level. Organizations and individuals residing along Suva-Nausori corridor is benefit directly through face to face training programmes facilitated by FCOSS staff and other identified professionals.

Activities implemented through this project is focusing on the “overarching theme of promoting ‘ equal and sustainable development’ through the vigorous promoting of the National Policy Framework for the Non formal and Adult Education and the Millennium Development Goals.
