IAVE 21st World Volunteer Conference Forum 110: The Power of One Magnified
This forum brings together two award-winning speakers, one from Tailand, the other Philippines.
Mechai Viravaidya and Efren Penaflorida will share how they are able to leverage on their situational backgrounds, connections, sheer creativity and perseverance to achieve breakthroughs in their chosen fields of interest.
Khun Mechai, founder of Population and Community Development Association(PDA) in Tailand, says, "My life can be devided into five parts, like the five fingers on your hand. The first was to reduce births through family planning (for which he received his famous moniker, Condom King)...and the last was to reduce avarice and greed by promoting philanthropy amongst youth." For his many successes in dealing with family planning, AIDS, education and livelihood, he has been accorded numerous honours including the Ramon Magsaysay Award, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Award for Public Health and the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship.
Efren founded the Dynamic Teen Company, which aims to divert kids from joining gangs and notorious fraternities to offer Filipino youths a way out through education, recreating school settings in unconvertional locations such as cemeteries and trash dumps. He was named CNN Hero of the Year for 2009 for his "puchcart classroom" initiatives. Through his personal experiences, he will bring to the audience his compelling story and exalt the fact that one is never too ordinary to be a hero.
This power-packed forum is moderated by lawyer Philip Koh, Chairman of the Board of World Vision Malaysia, an acknowledged thought leader in the NPO sector in the region.
