IAVE 21st World Volunteer Conference Workshop 112: Maximising the Power of One: The One-on-One Strategy
This workshop addresses the unique challenges of meeting needs through plumbing deep, wether through mentoring or counselling. There ar no quick-fixes, no instant results. There is a commitment to quality as opposed to quantity, for the copious amount of time needed to their mentor or counsel someone set on suicide.
Girl Scouts of the USA uses this strategy through a development model that teaches girls to know and trust themselves, build healthy relationships with one another, and join forces to deal with issues larger than themselves.
The Samaritans of Singapore emphasises this strategy through the importance of training and support for volunteers, and through the awareness of "ordinary" volunteers performing "extraordinary" roles that complement professional staff.
This workshop is invaluable for those who need to invest resources in training volunteers/helpers to deviler hands-on services that call for time, patience and perseverance. Learn from these established institutions that have developed processes and tools to motivate and sustain those who believe in investing in lives of others.
