IAVE 21st World Volunteer Conference Workshop 323: Staying Good to Do Good - Ethical Decision Making & Governance in NPOs

IAVE IRC

Being for profit does not exempt a corporation from ethical claims; similarly, being non-profit does not suggest an unassailable endowment with ethical goodness. This session will examine non-profits as exemplary of Gift economy. Our modern society intertwined with market and gift exchanges. Volunteerism sustains a non-profit as it garners support with its mission that purposed a public good. Is the organization serving a genuine public good or has it degenerated into a covert divisive activity that masks its real outcomes? Moral complications abound. Gifts can come with strings attached. Corporations become donors as means to gain credibility. The session will highlight non-profits adopting an ethical decision-making model as part of its commitment. Through case studies of situation ethical dilemmas, Philip will discuss the basic value commitments for organizations that exemplify ethical decision making and resolutions between alternatives analysed.
