IAVE 21st World Volunteer Conference Workshop 426: Volunteering and Faith: Working Together for Better Communities

IAVE IRC

Volunteers are critical to parishes; parishes can learn from volunteer organizations to better manage and retain their own volunteers; recognizing that volunteers have personal and spiritual motivations can assist in retention and cooperation. Religious faith is a key factor which influences not only their decision to volunteer, but also the wya in which they give their time and effort to helping others. Yet despite volunteerism being critical to the existence of strong and stable religious comminuties, parishes and volunteer organizations are often characterised by their differences rather than similarities. This workshop will discuss how greater dialogue between parishes and volunteer organizations can lead to better management and retention of volunteers for all involved parties. Participants will also examine how faith-based and personal motivations influence the way peopel choose to volunteer, looking into the various ways in which acknowledging these motivations can further enrich and strengthen volunteers' ties to their work.
