Messages of support for Japan
IAVE IRC
As the full scale of the disaster in Japan starts to sink in, our deepest sympathies go out to the victims of the earthquake and tsunami. IAVE President, KangHyun Lee said, “For those of us who wept for the victims in Christchurch in New Zealand a few weeks ago, our tears had not yet dried before a much much bigger natural calamity occurred in Japan.”
With the death toll rising, and many tens of thousands still missing, IAVE is calling on its members to do what is in their power to help Japan, and send messages of solidarity and sympathy to the National Representative, Ms. Seto Akiko (email: seto@iavejapan.org) or add a comment below.

Advice for when a tsunami occurs
Dear Win Mektripop Susana,
Thank you very much for your e-mails. With copying this, please allow me for not responding you each, however every message reached us is stayed in our heart with a strong sense of solidarity and human bonds. To share these warm sympathy with the victims and the Japanese people, I put them on the homepage of the Japan Civil Network for Disaster Relief in the East Japan (or, called "Japan Civil Net" in short).
The coastal areas residents of Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaragi prefectures, where the towns were completely destroyed and heavily damaged by Tsunami, have been well prepared and trained on a regular basis for disaster prevention. They built a high wall of breakwater along the coast, it is called like "a Great Wall of China". However, tsunami waves were over the assumption and far beyond the wall. The places and buildings where were designated for evacuation sites were submerged within a short time period. That caused the loss of so many persons' life.
Before ending, I would like to ensure that when tsunami occurs, "Leave immediately from house or place and go quickly up to a high safe point. No time for shilly shallying ".
Kind regards,
Akiko Seto

Personal sharing from NZ
Dear Seto
It was good to receive your message and have your personal perspective on the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami. We in New Zealand continue to feel very much a personal sharing given what has happened in our two countries. This last Saturday the daily newspaper for Wellington where I live gave all of its front page to the lessons we need to know here in Wellington about tsunamis. 150 years ago when Wellington was a small settlement is was experienced a major earthquake and tsunami. If it were to happen today it would have major consequences for our city.
We are also going to have special sessions where the learnings for volunteering will be discussed at the NZ Volunteering Conference at the end of May. We will welcome attendees and will share the outcome of the discussions after the conference.
Kind regards

Dear Seto and Tim; good to know you're sharing your experiences because that all those countries that are so close to the coast, are always at risk; the golden ring is hitting really hard, and we, in Mexico, are not far from having an earthquake. I would like to share your lessons to prevent heavy life lost if it ever happen again.
Please keep me posted of the outcomes of your NZ Conference in May!

Whatever it takes - Australia Supports Japan
Whatever it takes, however long, we will stand with Japan.
We share their resolve and will never concede our effort until all of their countrymen are safe.
Every Australian is shocked and saddened by the images of the terror that is bestowed on a kind and respectful people.
We admire the courage of the workers who have put their lives on the line to save their fellow citizens. We pray for their success. If I could I would stand beside them and do what had to be done.
We call on our governement to put every required resource at Japans disposal.
Long live the great people of the Rising Sun.

Indeed it is gratifying to hear from Akiko san that she, her family and all from IAVE Japan are safe - though I know this is not the opportune moment of talk of Conferences - I suggest that we change the name of the Korea IAVE Conference to "Volunteering in One World".
If we do not understand the seriousness of Natures turmoil and take up the challenge now - I do not know when we will.

Please accept this message of support and deep concern on behalf of all the IAVE-Netherlands members for all the people who are affected by the earthquake and the resulting tsunami en nuclear plant emergencies in Japan. We are following the news reports very closely. You have our deepest condolences for those who were killed/injured. And we wish you the most success in collaborating with other community partners in Japan to help the victims and cleanup actions. No country could have been more prepared for earthquakes than Japan, but this one was just too devastating. We wish you also strength during the aftershocks. Please know that we are thinking of you.

Thank you very much for your warmhearted messages.
Dear IAVE members, NRs, and Board Members.
I would like to share with you on the updated information on a huge earthquake hit the area of North East Pacific Ocean seaside of Japan last Friday afternoon. It is reported M9.0 which is first time ever in history and occurred from the north Japan to alongside to south side down. It is said that more 370,000 persons are stayed at shelters and over 10,000 were supposed dead or missing. At this moment, no correct figures was possible,
though. Tsunami destroyed the entire towns and washed out everything in a short time period. Furthermore, it caused accidents at the nuclear power plants, located at coastal towns of Fukushima pref. and Miyagi pref. The residents within 20km were asked to leave and stay outside to prevent them from nuclear bombing.
We, the Japanese are accustomed to earthquake, however it was really a big terrible one that I have never experienced in my life. I stayed overnight at Japan College of Foreing Languages (in Tokyo), and arrived at home next day when the subway transportation started operation. When I stepped in my apartment, I found the rooms a terribly mess. Papers, books, plates were thrown out from the shelves and glasses were broken. However, it was fortunate that the selves were not fallen down. Lifeline like water, electricity, gas were not stopped in my area. Still we have occasional afterquakes in Tokyo and other areas, too.
The first meeting of national emergency was held on March 14th and some 80 organizations representing the members of NNOPV (National Network Organizations Promoting Volunteering), NGO/NPOs, government attended inlcuding IAVE Japan. We discussed the way of help and assistance based on the feedback by persons who have visited the damages area and just retruned. We need to set up a platform office in an immediate manner for information centralizing and sharing what are needed, proper distrubution of monetary support for voluntary activities, and keep active information among us. Working together, we will be able to work effectively among the organizations. We will utilize the experience what we have learned from the Hanshin-Awaji earthquake in 1995. It is just a start for a long long way to go for recovery.
Receiving the warm and empathetic e-mail messages from the overseas IAVE members, I would like to extend my deep appreciation on behalf of IAVE Japan. My attempt will be done to deliver your voices to the people who suffer distress.
With kind regards,
Akiko Seto

Updated information from A. Seto, IAVE Japan
As the time goes, the more we get to know. Today's TV news reported that more 450,000 persons are stayed in shelters and 15,000 are still missing or found dead. The Japanese government decided to brownout in the certain areas in rotation to secure the necessary power supply for Tohoku (North-east) & Kanto (east) areas where were damaged by earthquake and tsunami. Nuclear electricity generation cut off supply due to the accident occured. To cope with, city transportation in Tokyo are under thinned-out operation. Platform were overflowed and I could not get on the train. So many Tokyoities commute by foot and me, too. Thinking of the earthquake-stricken victims, everyone accepts the hard situation together.
Hearing the shortage of food, water, blankets, we are working to find the routes and secure the road access for transportation and for delivery of goods required to refugees.
The people of Japan greatly acknowledge and extend appreciation to the citizens of the following countries who offer and send the rescue team up until now. Korea, Singapore, Germany, Switzerland, China, Ameria, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Russia, Taiwan and France.
Thank you for your kind attention.

Concern from IAVE Taiwan
It is a deep grief to hear the huge damage in our neighbor country. We volunteers in Taiwan feel the same way as our Japanese friends, not only we share the similar experience, but we are so clsoe geopraphically and emotionally. I send my concern to Ms Seto at the first time and got her confirmation on safety. However we feel so sad to those who are suffering the Tsunami and earthquake.

Our heartfelt wishes are sent to you
As a New Zealander we just feel so much for you and the people of Japan and send the sympathy of the Board and members of Volunteering New Zealand. You will understand how much poignancy it has for us in New Zealand, especially our people from Christchurch who are living through the devastation to their buildings. It was also very sad for us that several of those who died in Christchurch were students from Japan, caught in one of the buildings which collapsed.
It was good to hear this morning that New Zealand is able to help with a team from our Urban Search and Rescue Service heading to Japan to help in the search for those who have survived.
Our best wishes
