The results of the 2006 elections for President, Vice-President and regional representatives from Africa and Arab Nations were confirmed:

President:  Liz Burns;  Vice-President:  Rose Ekeleme;  Africa Region:  Vitalis Anopue;  Arab Nations:  Milo Ghossein.

Tan Chee Koon, Chair of the Nominating Committee, was warmly thanked for ensuring the smooth running of the elections.  Board Members present introduced themselves.

Stan Fisher, whose term on the Board had finished, was given a special vote of thanks for his outstanding commitment to IAVE as a member of long standing, as organiser of the 1998 World Conference in Edmonton, and as Vice-President.

Other outgoing Board members were also thanked.

4.     Board Report:
The President reported that 2005 -06 had been a good year for IAVE and that the organisation seemed to be moving in a good direction though some major core challenges remained.  The Strategic Plan published in 2002 had provided a sound framework for development, and good progress had been made on all four strategic goals.

1.  Positioning IAVE as a leadership organisation for volunteering worldwide through:

  • extensive travel by the President to meet members in the regions, made possible by funding from the Government of Scotland
  • strengthening relationships with UNV and other key networks and lead bodies
  • very successful regional conferences in Asia-Pacific

2.  Developing networks and issue-based activities by focussing on key areas of interest.  Key achievements here included:

  • highly successful youth conferences, linked to the IAVE World Conferences
  • the launch of the IAVE Global Corporate Volunteer Council (GCVC), bringing together leaders in the field at world level
  • the publication of the reports of the studies of volunteering in Nigeria and Botswana
  • the introduction of special interest forums as part of the world conference

3.  Developing our global membership to reflect the breadth and diversity of volunteering.

  • IAVE membership now on the increase again, thanks to sound administration by Kenn Allen
  • On-going website development, including sections in different languages
  • Better communication with members through e-IAVE and the website

4.  Enduring good governance and effective management of the organisation:

  • regular management meetings and decision making through the Board and the Executive Committee
  • publication of annual report
  • funding secured for specific purposes

Longer term resourcing of the organisation and building a staff team remain the two biggest challenges.

6.     By-Laws:
The President reminded members that major amendments to the By-laws had been made in 2002, with a few smaller changes made in 2004.  She reported that the Board had noted some anomalies and appointed a small group to review the By-laws.  The group would report to the Board at its 2007 meeting and any proposals for change would be brought to the Members’ Meeting in 2008.

7.     Other Business:
Patricia Nabti (Lebanon) asked whether the By-laws were accessible on the website.  Liz confirmed that they are available to all members and should be on the website.

Dr. Kang-Hyun Lee (Korea) commented that some of the limits on eligibility for service as President could limit the efficiency of the Board.  Liz referred this to the Board sub-group.

Mei Cobb (USA) asked about the number of IAVE members - just under 500 from 70 countries.

Kenn Allen (USA) asked members to send material for e-IAVE.

Amelita Go proposed a vote of thanks for Liz Burns.

8.     Next Meeting:
The next meeting will be in April 2008, in Panama City.
