A report from IAVE Nigeria Youth
IAVE Nigeria Youths Volunteer at the Federal Medical Centre: “Environmental Clean-Up”.
Environmental degradation is a major problem not only in developing countries but even in developed ones. But it is more intense in developed countries where government and individuals have not taken it seriously.
In Nigeria care for the environment has taken a back burner. It is for this reason the IAVE Nigerian Youth decided to take positive action in remedying the situation even if it is in a very small but very significant way that will touch the lives of many people.
On 25th August, 2007 IAVE Youth embarked on a clean-up exercise at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia. This activity involved young men and women who spent a considerable amount of time volunteering to cut the over grown grass, rake and ensure that the compound where sick people are kept is clean.
The Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia Dr. C. O.
Onuoha has commended the International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) youth members for devoting their time and efforts to volunteer at the hospital.
Addressing the youths after they had volunteered in cutting grass and raking the field at the Federal Medical Centre premises, Comrade Okoro Ogbonnaya the AEO Main in Support Services, F.M.C, who stood in for the Medical Director, disclosed that it is rare to see young people devoting their time to change the lives of others without asking for anything in return.
He urged them to visit the hospital from time to time to see how they can partner with Federal Medical Centre in other areas requiring volunteers and prayed God to strengthen them in their future endeavors.
Responding, the IAVE Youth President Marcel Umesi stated that membership is open to everybody and encouraged young men and women to use their spare time meaningfully by volunteering and to serve other people. He promised that the youths will visit the hospital from time to time to perform other functions including assisting sick patents all aimed at improving the quality of services in the hospital.
