Minutes

The IAVE National Representatives meeting took place at NVPC’s office in Singapore at 10:00AM on Monday, January 25, 2011. Dr. Lee, Debbie, Kenn, Kathi, Anthony gave introductions and encouraged national representatives to recruit members to IAVE, make contributions to E-IAVE and the website, and attend key events at the conference. Kathi announced the new mission statement of IAVE: “To foster a culture of volunteering worldwide to build a more fair, peaceful, inclusive and compassionate world.”

Mark explained the election process by outlining the responsibilities of the National Representative representative on the board, including being committed to representing IAVE nationally, working together with the board, and being actively involved in IAVE committees. The term of office is between world conferences (usually 2 years), with an option for reelection for one more term. Board meetings are once a year, and IAVE is usually able to cover the cost of travel expenses. The voting is only open to national representatives. Debbie said commitment was about 2 hours a week.

Ruth MacKenzie was elected as the only candidate.

The meeting ended with presentations on the 13th Asia Pacific Regional Volunteer Conference in Korea and the 2nd World Youth Summit in Colombia.

Canada's enviable quality of life relies on volunteerism

Congratulatioins IAVE for the wisdom in electing Ruth MacKenzie to their international board. One of the salient reasons Canada is one of the world's best countries to work, live, raise a family is because of its long and deep history of individuals choosing to make a difference in their communities by volunteering. The importance of public policy decisions is one factor in sustaining volunteer engaginig organizations but the real strength is Canadians who value the benefit they personally receive from volunteering and the ability to create an impact in over 161,000 nonprofit/voluntary sector organiziations. Ruth understands the complexities and the necessity of volunteer engagement and will bring that expertise and passion to IAVE.
