Who is Volunteering NZ Brief History
VNZ was established in August 2001
during the International Year of the Volunteer.
Volunteer Centres had lobbied for many years for the establishment of a national body for volunteering in NZ.
The International Year of the Volunteer and the recommendations of the Ministerial Reference Group gave impetus to the establishment of Volunteering New Zealand.
Who We Are - Membership
VNZ has two membership types -
Volunteer Centres and National organisations.
11 Volunteer Centres -
Independent of VNZ and of each other
60 plus national organisations - covering emergency services, sports, conservation, education, health, welfare, community support and advocacy.
Who are we - the VNZ Board
Volunteering NZ is governed by a Board of nine comprising
Six elected by VNZ’s members.
Three appointed members who are chosen by:
Maori (New Zealand’s indigenous people)
The Pacific Island communities in NZ
Other ethnicities who have come to NZ.
The Board choses the Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson and Secretary Treasurer
VNZ’s staff and funding
VNZ is currently staffed by a full time Executive Director and part-time accounts/admin officer
It receives its largest funding grant from the Government through a special Support for Volunteering Fund.
Other funds come from philanthropic bodies, lottery grants funding etc

The underpinning framework of our work
The overall volunteering environment - our work to create an environment that encourages and facilitates the growth of volunteering
Volunteering activity - VNZ working:
to ensure that particular groups of individuals are encouraged and facilitated to volunteer
to aid organisations involved in volunteering best develop and maintain their volunteer services
Focus on two main population groups
Youth (in particular Youth at Risk)
- Volunteers for today and tomorrow
The Baby Boomers
- A key group who could easily drop out
Promote Volunteering
On behalf of special or key groups
Through special occasions such as:
