Abstract:
Eight years have elapsed since the full transition of the Panama Canal to Panamanian stewardship and looking back we feel admiration, pride and satisfaction for the outstanding performance of the organization in managing one of the most strategic assets of our country. Our priority is to meet the needs of our customers and we do so conforming to the highest quality standards, preserving our environment, respecting the rights of our labor, promoting corporate values and ethics, and contributing to the development of Panama. Since the year 2000 we have steadily increased the contributions given to the State and by means of our outstanding financial performance results, which translate into more contributions to the State, we are directly supporting economic growth and improving the quality of life of Panamanians.
As a government institution, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) possess a corporate model of the highest level that relies on competitiveness, safety, quality, and transparency and that abides to the 10 principles of the Global Compact. Our model is unique to a government entity and could serve as example to other government institutions both in Panama and elsewhere. We have worked with the legal limitations that bound government institutions in our country, but far from finding excuses for not doing, we have found new avenues to continue doing and doing more for the people of Panama, always abiding to the strictest code of ethics, obeying the law, and respecting humankind and the environment.
The Panama Canal Authority strives to continue upholding its reputation as a Latin American model enterprise that is recognized at a worldwide level. The institution is governed by clear and binding concepts of social responsibility that the presentation will attempt to convey to the audience.
The presentation will highlight the policies the organization has developed for the preservation of the environment, the responsible management of the water resources, both to ensure the operations, as well as to provide potable water to a great part of the population of Panama; the production of electrical power and implementation of rigorous energy saving program and the recycling programs in place throughout the organization. The presentation will highlight the journey to promote human development and career advancement among our employees; the investment in public education through activities to reach out the neighboring communities. In a nutshell, the presentation will highlight the road walked towards creating value for our society and the remaining path we want to walk to help this country achieve the millennium goals.
