By Sofia Lloan, IAVE Member, Cable & Wireless Panama, Panama

A group of 50 volunteers from Cable & Wireless Panama led by Julio Spiegel, CEO of the company, carried out the 2 Minutes, 2 Bags beach cleaning challenge. This initiative seeks to make visible not only the serious problem of the poor waste management in Panama, but also seeks to raise awareness on the importance of caring for and protecting the marine ecosystem.

The challenge took place at the entrance of the Matías Hernández river in Costa del Este. Volunteers began cleaning the beach in that region of the Panamanian capital. This volunteer activity was carried out as a part of a celebration for Oceans Month, a part of an initiative to achieve Goals 14 (Life below Water) and 15 (Life on Land) of the Sustainable Development Goals.

During the cleanup challenge, the volunteers of Cable & Wireless Panama were able to exemplify the values of the company, working as one team that shares a common mission, working as one community.

At the end of the event, Mr. Spiegel spoke with the volunteers, leaving a message of reflection, “Actions like these make us understand that it is not only a question of cleaning up a beach for one morning. It´s about going further and getting involved as responsible and conscious individuals that take action in their day-to-day life looking to make a difference. A small action can have a significant contribution. We will start at home and look for ways to eliminate the use of plastics bags at work. “
